Why Is Suicide A Problem?
Suicide is a major problem in the US and the Las Vegas Valley area. “100 people per day die by suicide in the US. Imagine the horror and outrage if 100 passengers died in a plane crash every day, 365 days a year. That is the impact of suicide on our families and communities.” (Suicide In Nevada Fact Sheet 2012). In 2012 Nevada had the fourth highest rate of suicide in the country at 20.3/100,00 people, and suicide was the 6th leading cause of death in Nevada. Nevada has the highest rate of Senior citizen suicide at over double the average rate of the nation. More Nevadans die every year by suicide than by homicide, car crashes, HIV, or AIDS. It is these factors that make suicide such a problem in our community, and it must be stopped.
